Police said Betsy Arakawa made a call to a Santa Fe doctor a day after she was thought to have died
Police have confirmed that Gene Hackman’s wife, Betsy Arakawa, contacted a doctor a day after she was believed to have passed away.
The couple was discovered dead in their Santa Fe home on February 26. Authorities stated that the renowned actor died from cardiovascular disease, with Alzheimer’s playing a significant role.
It is believed that the 95-year-old actor passed away on February 18, about a week after Betsy’s reported death. Officials suggested that in his final days, Hackman may not have been aware of his wife’s passing.
Betsy, 65, was determined to have passed away from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome on what was believed to be February 11.
Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome is a rare illness that spreads through contact with the droppings or saliva of infected rodents; it cannot be transmitted between humans.

Dr. Heather Jarrell, New Mexico’s chief medical examiner, stated that it was “reasonable to conclude” the 65-year-old passed away from the disease on February 11.
However, new evidence suggests that calls were made from Betsy’s phone the day after she was believed to have died.
The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that she contacted a medical service in the early hours of February 12, despite initial reports placing her death on February 11.
Speaking to Fox News, officials stated: “We can now confirm that Mrs. Hackman’s phone was used on the morning of February 12 to call a Santa Fe medical center called Cloudberry Health.
“A total of three calls were made that morning, all directed to the medical center. Additionally, an incoming call from the same facility was received on Mrs. Hackman’s phone that afternoon.”

“That appeared as a missed call on Mrs. Hackman’s cell phone.”
Speaking on Good Morning America, Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza stated that the calls Betsy made on February 12 suggested she was likely seeking medical advice or assistance, indicating she may not have been feeling well.
The show reached out to Cloudberry Health, who confirmed that she had called that morning to inquire about an “esoteric treatment.” They noted that during the conversation, there were no audible signs of breathing difficulties or distress.
The couple’s dog, Zinna, was also found dead in their home, with authorities determining that the loyal pet likely succumbed to dehydration and starvation.
However, their other two dogs, Bear and Nikita, survived. First responders recounted how the dogs led them to the couple’s bodies.
