Chris Eubank Jr was hospitalized and in a critical condition following his recent victory over Conor Benn, according to his father, Chris Eubank Sr.

Following a hard-fought 12-round battle at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 26 April, Eubank Jr spent two nights at the Royal London Hospital. Although he emerged victorious by points decision, the aftermath was far from celebratory.

The 35-year-old revealed he was headbutted above the eye midway through the bout, resulting in a cut that later required surgery. Contrary to reports suggesting he had suffered a broken jaw, Eubank Jr clarified the real damage was around his eye. “There’s no broken jaw here. We are strong. Our bones are dense,” he told Sky Sports. “I had to go and have surgery to sew up the cut above my eye.”

His father, Chris Eubank Sr, speaking on his Call Chris YouTube channel, described a harrowing scene at the hospital. “I saw my son in a touch-and-go situation—life or death,” he said. “His face looked like a blown-up football. His legs were bent in such an unnatural way.”

Eubank Sr compared the experience to the aftermath of his infamous 1991 fight against Michael Watson, which resulted in Watson suffering life-altering brain injuries. “It brought me back to that night. I was seeing, hearing, and feeling all of it again,” he said.

According to Eubank Sr, while the head trauma was serious, his son also suffered significantly from dehydration during his hospital stay.

Despite the ordeal, Eubank Jr remains upbeat and grateful for the support he received. On the topic of a potential rematch with Benn, he was non-committal but open: “Boxing is a beautiful industry where anything can happen. Watch this space.”

He added, “If the rematch happens, great. If not, there are still amazing fights and goals ahead for me in this sport.”

Another layer to the story has been the speculation around the relationship between Eubank Jr and his father. There had been rumors of estrangement, particularly due to Eubank Sr’s vocal disapproval of his son facing the son of his old rival, Nigel Benn.

Yet, Eubank Sr reflected on the post-fight moment with emotion. “It was a moment of a lifetime,” he said. “It felt like it had all been orchestrated by some divine director. I pushed open the door, stepped in, and there was the world’s media—I just chuckled.”
